Cloister 'Abbaye de Flaran'

A visit to the magnificent cloister 'Abbaye de Flaran' is highly recommended. This abbey was founded by the monks of Escaladieu in 1151. The abbey is now one of the best preserved cloisters in the South-West of France and a great tourist attraction. The buildings and gardens of the abbey are situated in a beautiful park and are now an excellent example of a Cistercian cloister from the 12th century.
The cloister was reconstructed and extended several times until this ancient abbey was bought by the Departement du Gers in 1972. After a meticulous and extended renovation the cloister now stands in its original historic glory and is now often used for cultural activities and events.
The Abbaye de Flaran is situated in the Baise valley close to Valence-sur-Baise just some 14km east of Camping La Brouquere. An excellent opportunity to take a biking excursion to this great tourist sightseeing destination.
The Simonow-Collection in the Abbaye de Flaran
The Abbaye de Flaran permanently hosts the extraordinary 'Simonow'-Collection with a 100 fantastic works of art from the 17th to the 20th century. This collection features masterpieces from famous artists such as Braque, Cézanne, Chagall, Courbet, Delacroix, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Rodin, Rubens, Tiepolo, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. Michael Simonow already started to collect art in 1964 at the age of 18. Since 2002 his prestigeous collection is now on display in the Abbaye de Flaran.
