Centuries ago, Eauze was called 'Elusa' being the ancient capitol
of the Elusates who were the last to surrender to the Roman army
of Julius Caesar. Nowadays, Eauze is the capitol of the Armagnac
region, situated in the Gers on the border of the Bas-Armagnac
and the Ténarèze, home of the best Armagnacs.
Eauze is a small town with a friendly old historical heart and
calm character. A daytrip to Eauze means taking a nice walk through
town, have a look at the ancient architecture, do some shopping,
have a great lunch (e.g. in the well-known Cafe de France) and
of course tasting of delicious regional specialties. The best
day to visit Eauze is on thursdays, since on that day the weekly
town market is held.
You musn't miss a visit to the cathedral in the town centre of
Eauze, looking for traces of Jeanne d'Albert, the mother of Henri
IV. Another touristic highlight in Eauze is certainly the archeology
museum 'Le
Trésor d'Eauze' where a large collection of over 28'000
coins from the 3rd century is on display.
By the way, not far from Eauze there are other excavation sites
open to the public. For example near the village of Montreal-du-Gers
where the remains of an ancient gallic-roman villa with beautiful
mosaic floors has been discovered.
